CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S LIFE This program details the life of the common soldier during the Civil War. Artifacts and quotes are used to create an understanding of the economic, social and political differences between the North and South.
ENDVIEW PLANTATION AND LEE HALL MANSION This program discusses the history of Lee Hall Mansion and Endview Plantation.
THE EVOLUTION OF WEAPONRY This program utilizes a wide variety of small arms to demonstrate the relationships between war and technology by examining the development of firing systems.
CIVIL WAR IN HAMPTON ROADS This session is an overview of all the major events that occurred in this region during this conflict.
THE BATTLE OF THE IRONCLADS This presentation discusses one of the greatest battles in naval history.
HOLOCAUST This program utilizes World War II and the events of the Holocaust to generate an understanding of how destructive prejudice and intolerance can be in society. The economic, political and social environment that allowed the Nazi Party to assume control of Germany and create a repressive, militaristic society that led to World War II is identified.
A SOLDIER'S HERITAGE An overview of the uniforms and equipment of the American soldier.
IS THERE ARCHEOLOGY IN YOUR COMMUNITY? Learn why archeology is important, how it can benefit the community and what resources are available to those interested in pursuing this program.
THE PENINSULA CAMPAIGN This slide lecture studies the activities on the Virginia Peninsula during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. Topics such as the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac, Ft. Monroe and General John B. Magruder are discussed in this program.
VIRGINIA WAR MUSEUM An explanation of the history and purpose of the Virginia War Museum. The lecture includes artifacts, a detailed description of museum exhibits and a discussion of the museum's interpretation of war. A brief vignette of a Civil War general is also given.
WOMEN AT WAR From the home defense of the pioneer woman through the integration of modern women into the military, the willingness of this neglected segment of society to do more than its share is traced.
WITH A FIGHTING SPIRIT: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JOSEPH THOMAS NEWSOME This presentation shows the remarkable life of attorney J.T. Newsome (1869-1912), his historical contributions, accomplishments, and significance to the community's history.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Newport News citizens can choose from hundreds of instructional classes each quarter and participate in special programs throughout the year. This session discusses special programs for senior adults, before and after school activities, summer activities for school age children and programs for the disabled.
SPECIAL EVENTS This session gives an overview of the City's Special Events Calendar and how each event is
programmed. In addition, the session will offer some "how to" tips on coordinating and promoting community events.
SPORTS: PROGRAMS AND FACILITIES The City of Newport News operates a variety of parks and recreational facilities for residents and their guests. This session highlights information about Leeward Marina, Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run, Huntington Park Tennis Center, An Achievable Dream Tennis Center, Midtown Community Center, Stoney Run Athletic Complex, public pools, recreation centers and many other youth and adult opportunities.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE The Newport News Sheriff's Office is committed to the protection and well-being of our children. Safety checklists and tips are provided to the parents offering a wide range of resources including tips for after school, working and bus safety, and safety tips for parents.
NEWPORT NEWS ADULT DETENTION FACILITY (CITY JAIL) The adult detention facility is operated by the Sheriff's Office. This facility has custody of federal, state, and local inmates.
PROJECT LIFESAVER This program offers help to people caring for those who are victims of Alzheimer's and Related Mental Dysfunction Disorders (ARMD). Personalized radio transmitters are placed on the individuals in case the situation arises that an individual becomes lost or cannot be found.
SAFETY FOR OUR SENIORS (SOS) This program is for senior citizens who need to be checked on weekly. Deputies will call every weekday (Monday-Friday) morning and make weekly home visits. Citizens must live in the City of Newport News.
STRAIGHT TALK This program is offered every Thursday and a parent or guardian must attend the program with their child. The juvenile is given the opportunity to speak to inmates first hand about life in a detention facility.
STREET LAW This program is used to educate juvenile offenders about Virginia State Law via classroom instruction and a tour of the Newport News Detention Facility.
TRIAD/S.A.L.T. This program provides the opportunity for exchange of
information between law enforcement and senior citizens focusing on reducing unwarranted fear of crime and improving the quality of life for seniors. The S.A.L.T. Council decides what service or programs TRIAD will offer recruits, volunteers, and oversees the results.

CITY WIDE TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEM This session involves computer control of traffic signals. Presenters explain the signal-timing efforts that are in place, which are designed to help motorists move smoothly along City streets, and provisions that are taken to assist emergency-response vehicles. The presentation includes real-time viewing through cameras positioned along I-664 and other roadways. The demonstration takes place at City Hall; and, due to limited space, visiting groups are limited to six people at a time.
