HEALTH EDUCATION Sessions can be provided on a broad range of health education topics by the District's Health Educators or Registered Nurses. Topics include, but are not limited to, Family Planning, Immunizations, Child Health, Obesity/Overweight/Healthy Weight Management, HIV/AIDS, Communicable Disease prevention, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STD's), Dental Hygiene, Chronic Disease prevention and healthy aging.
· Family Planning: provides current information on birth control and planning healthy families.
· Sexually Transmitted Infections and/or HIV/AIDS: provides basic education/awareness about prevalence, risk, prevention and transmission of these infections.

CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS An explanation how to recognize the characteristics of children of alcoholics and how to help.

RECOGNIZING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADOLESCENT DRUG USE Explains how parents can recognize and intervene in drug and alcohol use by their children. Also discusses the dangers of adolescent drug and alcohol use.

The City of Newport News supports a number of programs and services for at-risk children and their families. Speakers can be scheduled through Department of Human Services, 926-6300.

Below is a list of presentation topics available:

ADOPTION Explains the process for adopting children who are in the care of Social Services. Discusses the specific needs of these children and the adoption process.

ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES Focuses on the problems of abuse, neglect and exploitation of incapacitated persons 18 years of age and older. The presentation explains Adult Protective Service laws, philosophy, reporting requirements, investigation procedures and case examples.

ADULT SERVICES An explanation of how Adult Services works to maximize self-sufficiency and prevent abuse, neglect and exploitation. Services discussed include companion services, day care for adults and other programs to aid adults.

CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES A brief history of child abuse, neglect and the child protection laws in Virginia. Definitions of child abuse and neglect are given and the causes and factors of abuse are discussed. Information on how to report suspected abuse and neglect and how the community can help to protect children is provided.

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE An overview of child sexual abuse cases, how to recognize warning signs and unstable family situations.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES Explains how civic, social and church organizations, as well as individual citizens, can work with the Department of Social Services to help those in need.

CREATING A POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE A discussion of what family therapy is as provided by a public social service agency. Also discussed is how a positive atmosphere for change is established within a family.

CUSTODY INVESTIGATIONS A discussion which answers questions about custody investigation and home study. This includes how a comprehensive assessment of a family's strengths and needs are provided when ordered by court or requested by another social services agency.

DAY CARE Explains what quality day care is, how you choose a provider, what the effects of day care on children are and how to become a day care provider.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES Explains what the Employment Services Program is, who is trained, what training is provided, what the incentives to the business community to hire Social Services clients are and how the Employment Services Program helps community organizations or businesses.

FAMILY SERVICES A discussion of services available to eligible clients through Social Work Services. Includes counseling, emergency needs, child protective services, parenting education, family planning, and court ordered supervision.

FOOD STAMPS Overview of the Food Stamp Program including the conditions of eligibility, resource limits, income guidelines and household composition

FOSTER CARE Explanation of what foster care is, why it is needed and how the community and individual citizens can help.

FUEL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

An overview of Fuel Assistance Program which provides fuel to eligible citizens during the late fall and winter months.

HOMELESS AND HOUSING SERVICES A discussion concerning homelessness in Newport News, services needed by homeless families and

individuals, and community efforts to assist the homeless.

NEWPORT NEWS HEALTHY FAMILIES INITIATIVE Did you know that 90% of a child's brain development occurs in the first three years of life? Did you know that problem solving and language skills, emotional temperament, and the capacity to form healthy relationships with others are all significantly influenced by the experiences of early childhood? This presentation provides an overview of services and resources for families in Newport News to assure that children are born healthy, grow up healthy in those first critical years of life, and that they reach school age healthy and ready to learn.

REAL ESTATE TAX RELIEF

An explanation of the City's Real Estate Tax Relief Program including age requirements, income and resource guidelines, and the yearly beginning and ending dates for the program.

SOCIAL WORK SERVICES

An overview of the service provided by the Newport News Department of Social Services. Needs, philosophy, focus and goals of the Social Work Service Bureau are discussed.

TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE TO NEEDY FAMILIES (TANF) The presentation outlines the conditions of eligibility, resource limits and household composition.

VOLUNTEERING WITH NEWPORT NEWS HUMAN SERVICES Explains opportunities that are available and how you can become a volunteer.

WELFARE FRAUD AND FRAUD PREVENTION A discussion of the myths and facts concerning welfare fraud including investigative methods used and fraud prevention.

THE WELFARE MYTHS Discusses commonly held ideas concerning public welfare and the validity of these beliefs.
