STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS This session covers the processes involved in starting a business and preparing a business plan. Other topics include information on various federal, state and local business loan programs, as well as state and local Enterprise Zone incentives.

NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC SCHOOLS Speakers are available to discuss the variety of education programs offered through Newport News Public Schools. Speakers can be scheduled through 
Community Relations and Legislative Services, 591-4500.


The programs fall into three categories:

Comprehensive Programs provide a complete and well-balanced education program designed to meet the needs of all children. These schools offer a broad program of study addressing math, science, English and language arts, social studies, the arts and physical education. They also include foreign languages and vocational education.

Magnet Programs offer specialized focus in the curriculum or a distinctive type of environment or instruction. Some programs are school-wide, while others are programs within the school. Programs include: math, science and technology; traditional elementary, middle and high school; environmental science; engineering and technology; arts and communication; and aviation.

PREPARING FOR DISASTER

Presentations are tailored to individual needs and are available on all facets of disaster and emergency planning. Topics include pre-planning; individual, business and municipal response to emergencies; and the City's response to natural disasters, man-made disasters and war.

 

THE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS PROGRAM This session gives an overview of the internship opportunities available to high school students who are interested in a career with the Emergency Medical Service. The Medical Assistants Program gives high school students the opportunity to ride with Emergency Medical Technicians on calls. The program operates in conjunction with the New Horizons Regional Education Center.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE What are household hazardous wastes? This session defines what items are considered a household hazardous waste and explains what impact they have on the environment and City facilities. It also covers how to dispose of household hazardous waste properly and includes information on how to reduce the generation of household hazardous waste by use of less toxic products.

RECYCLING This session answers the many questions people have about recycling. It defines recycling, explains what recycling accomplishes, explores its impact on citizens and the environment, discusses recycling marketing realities, and explores the recycling potential for Newport News.

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT What is stormwater management? What roles do developers and citizens play in it? This session explains the City of Newport News Stormwater Management Program and how it affects different areas of the municipality. Information items presented include fees, runoff quantity and quality, protection requirements imposed on the City and how those requirements affect developers and private citizens, particularly those in Chesapeake Bay Preservation areas. With sufficient lead-time, displays and handouts can include copies of aerial photographs that are specifically related to the group.

A CAREER IN THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT This session discusses career opportunities in the Newport News Fire Department and the hiring process. Information regarding the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy can also be provided.

ARSON INVESTIGATION This session includes information on how investigators determine the origin and cause of an arson fire, how arson investigations are conducted, and the measures to prevent arson related crimes.

USING FIRE EXTINGUISHERS THE RIGHT WAY Designed for employees of businesses, this session demonstrates the proper use and operation of fire extinguishers.

SPECIALTY TEAMS

BOMB TEAM Informational session that educates businesses on establishing a bomb threat and evacuation plan with tips on reducing the frequency and impact of bomb threats.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TEAM The Fire Department's hazardous materials team response to a variety of incidents and involve dangerous situations, such as chemical spills and gas leaks.

DIVE TEAM/MARINE INCIDENT RESPONSE TEAM The Dive Team/Marine Response Team provides search and rescue service along the James River, Chesapeake Bay and other waterways in the City. This session gives an overview of evidence recovery, water rescues and searches for overdue boats.

TECHNICAL RESCUE TEAM The Technical Rescue Team supplies the City with technical data, equipment, and expertise during complex rescue and extrication situations.

FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY EDUCATION 
WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY There are steps that can be taken while waiting for professional emergency medical assistance. This session reviews basic first aid measures that can be used to assist a victim until an ambulance arrives.

FIRE SAFETY FOR MATURE ADULTS Educational programs are designed to teach mature adults about home escape planning and fire prevention.

TOURING A FIRE STATION Individual or group tours are conducted at any of the City's stations by firefighters and emergency medical technicians.

WORKPLACE SAFETY This program focuses on being safe in your workplace, following proper evacuation procedures, and how to prevent fires in the workplace.

JUVENILE FIRESETTER PROGRAM Designed for children ages 3-14 and who engage in fire play.

FIRE SAFETY EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN Educational programs are available for children on fire safety and prevention with an emphasis on home escape planning, "Stop, Drop, and Roll," and fire hazards.
