William F. Haskins, Jr. is a native of Newport News, Virginia. He was educated in the Newport News Public School system, graduating from Newport News High School. After graduation, Mr. Haskins attended the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. He rose through the ranks at the Shipyard to retire after 47 years of service as the Manager of Research and Development.
Mr. Haskins’ love for the City of Newport News led him to serve over 21 years on City Council. Councilman Haskins served as Vice Mayor from 1978 until 1980. He has always worked hard and given much of his time and effort to ensure that Newport News is an enjoyable place for everyone to live.
Councilman Haskins has served on numerous Boards, Commissions and Committees over the years. He was the first chairman of the Workforce Development Consortium who, in partnership with Thomas Nelson Community College, developed unique ways to train the local workforce. He currently serves on the Hampton Roads Transportation District Commission (HRT), the Newport News Environmental Commission, Sister Cities Newport News and previously served on the Transportation Safety Commission.
