The Honorable Sharon P. Scott is serving her second term as one of two council members who represent the North District of the City of Newport News. Her present term expires on June 30, 2009.
Scott, on Council since 2002, works full-time as a Journalist for the Hampton Roads Voice newspaper. She is also president of a small, disadvantaged, minority-owned business, SPS Professionals, Inc., where she is a writer, tax accountant, book producer and business consultant.
Each time she ran for council, her platform highlighted the need for change and new leadership. She has implemented initiatives that brought about change in her district. She also encourages citizen participation, which created a model of open government across the entire city.
Councilwoman Scott has hosted town hall meetings on the fourth Monday, nine months of the year, since June 2002. This has provided her constituents an opportunity to meet, address concerns and receive updates on items of interest. Several guests and department heads have attended to explain projects, answer questions or provide updates on city-wide initiatives.
Scott represents the most diverse district in the city, which is an area primed for growth. To assist those who are disadvantaged, she hosts an annual Food Drive to help “take a bite out of hunger” during the holidays. She also partners with other organizations and civic groups to help the local food bank replenish its diminishing supplies. For the past two years, she has also partnered with non-profit organizations to ensure that children, who may otherwise go without food during the summer, had an opportunity to eat free meals daily. She is working toward providing students with after school snacks to continue to help “take a bite out of hunger”.
In addition to being an elected official and businesswoman, Scott serves on several boards and commissions, whose goal is to improve the quality of life for local, regional and state citizens. She serves as a Board Member of the Office Of Human Affairs, Sister Cites of Newport News, Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, Hampton Roads Regional Jail, Survivors Not Victims (SNV). She also serves on the Community Economic Development Policy Committee for the National League of Cities (NLC), which proposes resolutions that pertains to citizens across the United States. She is presently a member of Women In Municipal Government (WIMG), Virginia Municipal League (VML): Community Economic Development Policy Committee and Legislative Committee; National Black Caucus Of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) and the NAACP. Scott was appointed by both Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to serve on the Design Build Review Management Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The eight-year term expires in 2010.
Over the past seven-plus years, Scott’s Awards included: NAACP Living Legion Award, YWCA Women of Distinction, Denbigh Military Retirees Club Distinguished Community Service, National Association Of Negro Business and Professional Women Community Service, Hampton/Newport News Continental Societies’ Community Service, COMPA’s Distinguished Public Service, Human Rights Commission Community Service and various other acknowledgements and accolades.
She is often asked to serve as guest speaker during community and school functions, or mistress of ceremony for events across the city.
A 1994 graduate of Christopher Newport University, Scott has a Bachelor’s degree in English, Writing Emphasis. She completed coursework toward a minor in accounting. She also has an Associate’s Degree in Science from Paul D. Camp Community College, with an emphasis on Education.
Her passion includes serving others, traveling, reading, writing and exercising. She is an active member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. She has one son and three granddaughters.
