NEWPORT NEWS CITY COUNCIL – September 11, 2007

 

Item 13.   Citizen Comments on Matters Germane to the Business of City Council

S. Cherry - Expressed appreciation to the City for its support in the recent death of her husband Gregory Cherry. indicated her desire to continue the community work the he was involved in.

 
C. Powell - Expressed support for keeping the Deep Creek Pier. 
 

R. DeMaria - Provided historical background on the initial construction of the Deep Creek Pier and the agreement between the donor of the property and Warwick County to keep and maintain  the pier.

 

J. DeMaria, Jr. - Requested another review by City Council on the pending demolition of the Deep Creek Pier.

 

J. DeMaria, Sr. - Spoke on the history of the conveyance of the Deep Creek Pier and adjacent property to Warwick County and the Commitment by the county to maintain the pier.

 

J. Atkinson - Reported on the results of his title search of the Deep Creek Pier property, and offered suggestions to permit it to remain in place.

 

D. Kundis - Questioned the City’s lack of proper maintenance and Upkeep of the Deep Creek Pier. Urged keeping and rebuilding the pier.

 

R. Withrow - Urged the City to keep and maintain the Deep Creek Pier. Stressed the positive benefits of keeping the pier.

 

J. Gergeley - Urged the City to keep Deep Creek Pier. Suggested that it is part of the City’s heritage.

 

S. Taylor - Thanked the City for the new Doris Miller pool.; Spoke positively about the Police academy; Requested City recognition for the “After School Alliance” and its event on October 18, 2007

 

K. Place - Spoke on City spending and priorities and citizen dissatisfaction with the City’s decisions with regard to them.

 

J. Procyson - Requested clarification of selected CIP projects and related borrowing/spending. City Manager is to provide a report.

       Item 14 .   New Business and Councilmember Comments       

                                   
 

Allen - Thanked all who responded to his mother’s recent illness.

 

Frank - Requested City Manager to conduct a study in the context of Next CIP of replacing the Deep Creek Pier.; Wished Councilwoman Scott a speedy recovery.; Happy Jewish new year; Welcomed Councilwoman McMillan back from her recent surgery.

 

McMillan - Thanked everyone for their wishes for a speedy recovery from her recent surgery.; Invited everyone to the 17th Denbigh Day this Saturday.

 

Scott -  Congratulated new commander of American Legion Post.

 

Bateman - Requested City Manager report on the possibility of small Garbage cans for families that don’t need the larger cans.
