NEWPORT NEWS CITY COUNCIL - October 9, 2007

 

Item 5. Citizen Comments on Matters Germane to the Business of City Council

 

C. Powell - Expressed concern about the safety of watermen using the Menchville wharf.

 

J. DeMaria -  Commented on Mayor Frank’s request to the City Manager, to consider the inclusion of a replacement for the Deep Creek Pier in the City’s CIP; expressed his opinion that the City did not provide adequate maintenance of the Deep Creek Pier; provided historical ownership and transfer of ownership information on the Deep Creek Pier.

 

C. Hogge - Presented old maps and photos of the Deep Creek harbor noting its attributes and historical significance of the harbor; requested that the Deep Creek Pier be replaced.

 

J. Procyson - Thanked the City Manager for his recent written response to his earlier question about the budget and Hogge Pond  project; indicated that Hogge Pond is privately owned and that the City should not be spending money on it; commented on what he felt was conflicting information on the justification for the King William Reservoir project.

 

R. Withrow - Inquired about what assurance there was for citizens that the Deep Creek Pier would be in the City’s CIP; questioned the expenses proposed for improving the Menchville wharf mooring area.

Item 6.      New Business and Councilmember Comments

 

City Manager - Provided a verbal report on actions taken to demolish the Deep Creek Pier and improvements planned for the Menchville wharf. Also outlined staffs’ directions for presenting alternatives for providing mooring space in the forthcoming CIP;  had Parks and Recreation staff comment on the details of the Wavescreen Fishing Pier project including the project’s funding sources.

 

Bateman - Expressed his condolences to the Joann Davis family.

 

Frank  - Requested a resolution in memoriam for Joann Davis.

 

McMillan - Moved to excuse Councilman Haskins – seconded and approved.

 

Scott  - Advised that the next North District Town meeting is scheduled for October 22; expressed birthday wishes to Cleder Jones and Alan Archer.
