Item 10. Citizen Comments on Matters Germane to the Business of City Council

 

K. Wynn - Urged more accountability by police officers. Converned that the officer that shot L. Harper is still on active duty.

C. Hogge - Read 2002 internal memo suggesting that Deep Creek pier be kept open for public access. Advocating keeping the pier

D. Kundis - Expressed his support for the recall effort for the mayor. Stressed need for City to stop extravagant spending of taxpayer dollars.

I. Asadi - Proposed "Legacy Square" concept for designated area of the Southeast Community. Read plaque noting historical events as noted by a 90-year old citizen

G. Colley - Expressed thanks to the City for supporting the neighborhood swimmng pool program. Expressed gratitude for City Council's request to the General Assembly to ban smoking in restaurants. Thanked the City for its support of City soccer leagues and asked for additional field hockey and soccer fields.

C. Powell - Expressed opposition to a proposed "walking" pier at Deep Creek. Expressed his desire for a full replacement pier.

B. Killebrew - Expressed goal of RETRO for a reduction of the real estate tax rate to $.93. Suggested that there needs to be spending reductions in both the operating and capital budgets.

C. Nunnally - Advocated stricter spending of tax dollars. Expressed support for the L. Harper family. Asked City to advocate for a repeal of the HRTA legislation.

A. Harris - Noted her family's local history and its desire to develop family-owned property in the Southeast community.

D. Murray - Concerned that Crawford Road area residents will be impacted tax-wise by the Asheton development.

K. Place - Spoke on State tax policy regarding the funding of public transportation and suggested that a statewide increase in the gas tax would be a palatable way of funding improved transportation. Further suggested that this be included in the City's legislative program.

 

Item 11. New Business and Councilmember Comments

City Manager - Reported that the City has alternatives and programs to assist with the homeless. Wished citizens a joyous holiday season.

City Attorney - Wished all a happy holiday and New Year

McMillan - Requested a report on whether the new softball complex in Denbigh was intended to be converted to soccer fields in the off season. Expressed condolences to the Fred Gann family. Wished Happy Holidays to all.

Scott - Reminded citizens of North District Food Drive programs on December 15 at Patrick Henry Mall. Advised that the next North District Town Hall meeting is scheduled for Januray 21, fetauring staff from Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Wished Happy Holidays to all.

Whitaker - Reported that $5,000 was raised during the recent diabetes campaign. Wished Happy Holidays to all

Allen - Responded to a previous speaker's concern about increased property values in the neighborhood adjacent to the Asheton Development.

Bateman - Wished Happy Holidays to all.

Frank - Congratulated Rob Wittman on his election to Congress to replace Jo Ann Davis. Expressed condolences to the Fred Gann family. Wished a joyous holiday season to all.

Haskins - Wished all a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.
