A description of the Commission on Youth

Purpose

To advocate for, plan, evaluate, and support the implementation of strategies for addressing issues related to youth. Assist in the development of a strategic plan for youth for the City and monitor and advise the Council on its implementation. To identify the need for youth services and make recommendations for service enhancements. To promote communication, cooperation, and coordination among youth serving organizations. To promote community understanding and acceptance of positive youth development strategies. To encourage youth participation and involvement in governmental and community endeavors.

    Newport News School Division Superintendent or Designee
    Newport News Parks, Recreation, & Tourism Director or Designee
    6 Other Representatives from Youth-Serving Agencies/Organizations

8 General Citizen Adult Members

8 Youth Members
    1 Representative from each of the five Public High Schools
    1 Representative from each of the two Private Schools
    1 Representative from the Mayor’s Youth Commission

Term Of Office

Two Consecutive Four Year Terms of Office for Adults
Two Consecutive One Year Terms of Office for Youth

Meetings

Second Thursday of each month (excluding July and December) from 4 - 5:30 pm.
