Purpose
The Newport News Arts Commission (NNAC) provides support for arts and cultural activities within the City of Newport News, and activities within Greater Hampton Roads, that serve the City's residents. This support takes the form of General Operating Support Grants and Special Project Grants. The NNAC publishes and distributes an arts brochure featuring the City's diverse arts offerings. Each year the NNAC supports Arts Advocacy Day at the Virginia General Assembly. The NNAC provides funding recommendations to the City Council following the conclusion of the grant application process each July.
The Newport News Arts Commission is a member of Virginians for the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads.

Membership
The membership of the NNAC currently stands at ten, nine general public representatives appointed by the City Council and one seat appointed by the Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools. Commissioners are appointed for three year terms and may be reappointed for a maximum tenure of ten years.
Meeting Dates
The NNAC meets at 8:30 a.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. No meetings are held during the months of August, November, December, February, April, or June. Additional meetings are scheduled during the grant application process and at other times as needed.
