Information of interest to inmate family members
Visitation is scheduled on Saturdays for all inmates. Special visits are granted for inmates with out of town family members or for extenuating circumstances. These situations are rare, and must be approved by the Jail Administrator or his/her designee. When visitation is conducted in the outside courtyard in fair weather, children are allowed. During months when visitation is conducted in the gymnasium due to cold or inclement weather, children are not allowed. All visitors must be on the inmate's visitation list. A maximum of six names are allowed on the visitation list, with three visitors being allowed at one time. General population receives visitors from 9:30–11:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings, and special population visitation is from 1:00–3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoons. No purses or personal items of any type are allowed, and no personal property for inmates will be accepted during visitation.
Inmate personal property is accepted in Building 1 on Tuesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Due to limitations on space, acceptable items are restricted to the items on the Inmate Personal Property List. Items not on the list will not be accepted.
Inmates have weekly Canteen privileges each Tuesday and Thursday. Canteen Request Forms must be in the designated box in the Dining Hall by 6:30 a.m. on the Canteen date.
All deposits to an inmate's Canteen account must be mailed in the form of a money order to the following address:
P. O. Box 2297
Newport News, Virginia 23609
Release dates are computed either by the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC), or by the Staff Technician (Mrs. Wilson) at the Newport News Department of Adult Corrections, depending on the length of the inmate's sentence and the charges. If the sentence is twelve months or less, the Record's Staff Technician computes the release date (either Felony or Misdemeanor time). If the sentence is one year or more, the release date is computed by the Virginia Department of Corrections. The inmate receives a Court and Legal Update Sheet stating the release date, along with their Virginia State Penitentiary (VSP) number the same date that the Staff Technician is notified by DOC.
For Felony convictions — Inmates will serve 85% of their sentence.
For Misdemeanor convictions — Inmates will serve 50% of their sentence.
For Civil Convictions (child support) — Inmates will serve the entire sentence imposed by the Judge.
There is a web site operated by the Virginia Department of Corrections which provides information regarding inmate release dates (if the date has been computed). An inmate VSP number would be required to access their release date. The address of the web site is www.vadoc.state.va.us
The Central Locator number for the Virginia Department of Corrections is (804) 674-3131. The inmate's full name and date of birth would be required.
Weekenders serve from Friday at 6:00 p.m. until Sunday at 5:00 p.m. This is a total of two days served each weekend.
No jail credit is earned while waiting in court to be sentenced. Each disposition for each sentencing court is different, and the Court's instructions are followed accordingly for each inmate.
